Information

Salamina Attikis

Salamis (also known as Koulouri in ancient times), is the largest island of the Saronic Gulf. It is separated from the coast of Attica by the Strait of Pachi (northwest) and the Strait of Perama (east). Salamis is the homeland of Ajax and the tragic poet Euripides, place of residence of Nobel laureate poet Angelos Sikelianos, and the base of Karaiskakis during the Greek revolution. Salamis is famous worldwide for the battle that took place there in 480 BC. The success of the Greek fleet against the much bigger Persian fleet is considered by many historians one of the most important battles in the European history.

Nowadays Salamis is a the permanent residence for nearly 40,000 people, making it the island with the largest permanent population density in Greece. There are frequent itineraries from Perama to Paloukia daily and this is convenient for those who want to live here and work in the region of Piraeus. Moreover, Salamis is an ideal destination for a day trip for those who want a short escape from the noisy capital. The main city of Salamis is a modern and lively place which still maintains its traditional character with elegant neoclassical buildings and insular characteristics.

How to get there:

  • By motorboat or ferry boat from Perama. The boat leaves the port  every 15 minutes and the trip lasts 15 minutes.
  • By ferry boat from Piraeus. The boat arrives at Paloukia and the trip lasts 45 minutes.
  • By ferry-boat from Faneromeni to New Peramos. The trip lasts 3 minutes.
